Upgraded to Maverick

Posted by lucidfox.org at

Almost everything works fine, the upgrade went more smoothly than I expected. However, half my GTK widgets are now white in all themes, and the Pinta canvas is grey and doesn’t work. I suspect it might be due to the large number of custom PPA packages previously installed on my Lucid system.

Going to do a fresh install from the daily ISO, to get btrfs. Also, it’s going to be a 64-bit ISO. This will be my first time trying 64-bit Ubuntu, after spending four and a half years on 32-bit. Wish me luck!

All the best with the 64-bit Ubuntu. I have been using it from Karmic and i haven’t felt any problem with it until now :)

Have fun. I have a 64 bit box with maverick with root on a compressed 2 disk btrfs (in btrfs raid1 config), works really well (so far). Using the x-edgers nouveau + gallium to be finally free drivers on nvidia as well (and no GTK artefacts).

I’m having similar problems with gtk widgets on my machine, a athlonXp 2500+/radeon 9600 pro (r300). From what I can tell, these might be related to the new Cairo in Maverick. I think they updated they’re api and it’s broken now. From what I here, the problem might be dependent on what your graphics hardware.

Writing from the reinstalled copy: reinstall fixed the widgets. Are the nouveau gallium drivers in the PPA, or will I need to build them from source?

The nouveau gallium drivers are in the PPA.

aptitude install libgl1-mesa-dri-gallium

I have to “compiz —replace” once Gnome has started for some reason, but apart from that 3D nouveau/gallium works fine (including googleearth — the irony).

same trouble here with white gtk widgets in LUCID ! just after updating my nvidia drivers to 256 (i was previously in 195)

so i just downgraded nvidia-current package to 195 and all works fine now.

you could try this :-)
